Purpose

The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

So what is it all about?

Toastmasters is all about doing something for yourself, and in the process helping others to achieve the same sort of results.

People join Toastmasters for all sorts of reasons. They may want to improve their self-confidence, learn how to make presentations, or meet people in a easy comfortable social setting.

People stay in Toastmasters because it gives them a safe place to practise their speaking skills, the enjoyment that they gain from mentoring new toastmasters, learning from the life experiences of other people, through the speeches that are presented.

What does the Waikanae club offer?

Toastmasters of Waikanae, is a club that places an emphasis on a friendly welcoming atmosphere.
There are plenty of opportunities to practise both speaking and leadership skills. We try and give everyone present a chance to speak during the evening. This is not a lecture room. You learn in Toastmasters by doing. So you will get a chance to undertake all the tasks that go into running an effective meeting. Leading it from the front, speaking on your feet, making presentations, and networking with your fellow club members over a cup of tea or coffee.

Waikanae also runs Speechcraft, a kick start program which is run over 8 weeks, at least yearly. Give us a call on 0800-PEOPLE or drop us an e-mail to waikanae@toastmasters.org.nz or fill in the contact form.
The next course will be starting in July 2004. Places are limited. Call Ian Craigen on 04-902-3847 to register your interest in attending this course.

You can start the Toastmasters' educational programme at any time during the year however, so why not start now? Call us on 0800-PEOPLE

How much does it cost?

Toastmasters of Waikanae collects fees on a six-monthly basis. The membership fee is currently set at NZ$60 per six months. This provides approximately NZ$36 to pay affiliation fees to Toastmasters International, and the remainder to cover items such as rent, equipment, and materials.

There is an initial joining fee of NZ$32. This buys the basic Communication and Leadership program manual, and also gets you your choice of two Advanced series manuals, once you have completed the first manual. This initial fee, is paid to Toastmasters International, and joins you up for life. If you leave the Waikanae club, you can transfer to another club, or be reinstated, without paying any extra fees over to Toastmasters International.

I want to find out more, who do I talk to?

You can give us a call on 0800-PEOPLE, or drop into a meeting. If you prefer email you can email us or fill in the contact form and write in with your question.
