General Information
On behalf of College Sport Wellington (CSW), the Wellington Orienteering Club co-ordinates schools orienteering in the greater Wellington Area. The principal event is the CSW Secondary Schools Championships.A secondary school competition is also held on maps in and around the Wellington area in which both individuals and school teams compete over a series of events. Competition is divided into three age grades - Senior, Intermediate and Junior - and two different technical levels - Championship and Standard - to cater for students with different levels of orienteering experience. Team results at each event are based on the results of the best 3 competitors from each school at each event.
For those wishing to compete outside the Wellington area, all secondary school students are also eligible to compete in the North Island Secondary School Championships and in the New Zealand Secondary School Championships which are held at mid-year. Results at the NZSS Champs, along with other events, will form the basis for the selection of a NZ Secondary Schools team to compete against Australian Schools in Canberra in late September/early October.
An inter-schools match between Hawkes Bay Schools and a CSW team is also held in most years.
CSW O League
The CSW O League will be run in association with club events put on by Wellington Orienteering Club and Orienteering Hutt Valley. (All events will be held between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm on the day Directions are given under the "Events" link on the WOC front page.) Details for 2009 will be listed as soon as available.
Age grades and difficulty levels for thes eevents will follow the standard for NZ Secondary School events.
| Grade | Age | Championship | Standard |
| Senior | Born 1992 or earlier | Difficult (Red) | Medium difficulty (Orange) |
| Intermediate | Born 1993 or later | Medium difficulty (Orange) | Easy (Yellow) |
| Junior | Born 1995 or later | Easy (Yellow) | Very easy (White) |
At each event the fastest competitor in each class and grade will be awarded 25 points. The other competitors will then be awarded a number of points depending on the ratio of their time to the winner's time. For teams, the points for the top 3 runners from each team will be added to give the team score. There is no limit on the number in a team for each grade. In recognition of the higher technical difficulty of the Championship grades compared to the Standard grades, points from runners in Standard grades will carry a weight of 0.6 i.e. a score of 25.0 in a Standard grade will only count as 15.0 for the purposes of the teams competition.
CSW Champs
The College Sport Wellington Championships are the major event of the CSW season. Dates for 2009 will be announced as soon as they are available.
CSW Results
Results for the 2009 will be posted after each event.
National Events
The two main secondary school events outside the Wellington region are the New Zealand Secondary School Championships and the North Island Secondary School Championships. These are generally held in the mid-year and Easter breaks respectively. Both events have both an individual and a relay competition. Age grades and classes for the individual are as for the CSW Championships. The relay event has Senior, Intermediate and Junior age grades but does not have separate difficulty levels within these grades.
Dates and venues for 2009 are:
| NISS Championships - Individual | Friday 20 April | Taranaki |
| NISS Championships - Relay | Saturday 21 April | Taranaki |
| NZSS Championships - Individual | Friday 13 July | Christchurch |
| NZSS Championships - Relay | Saturday 14 July | Christchurch |
International Events
Since 2003 a New Zealand Secondary Schools team has competed against the Australian State teams at the Australain Schools Championships. This is generally held in late September. The event consists of an Individual race and a Relay race for both Boys and Girls. Age grades are 16 and over, and 15 and under. The New Zealand team is picked on the basis of all known form with results from the NZSS Championships being given particular weight.
In January 2009, in association with the Oceania Orienteering Championships a full Australian Schools team ran against the NZ team in Auckland.
