SOLD 1951 Excelsior Manxman 250cc Prototype.
No Excelsior Manxman,s were produced after the war except for
this one and only prototype engine and gearbox assembly. It never went into
production because Excelsior made the decision to discontinue building there
own engines. So no more Manxman models which was a pity as this engine was
ahead of its time and certainly unique, as far as British motorcycles of that
era are concerned, it does not leak oil!!! Nor does it fill its crankcase
with oil when not used for a few weeks.
The design features chain drive to the overhead
camshaft with all the mechanism totally enclosed. The heavily finned crankcase
houses a short stroke crankshaft which features small bobweights and a short
steel connecting rod. The flywheel is outside of the crankcase and enclosed
between that and the chain case assembly. Very similar to the factory racing
Nortons of 1954 excepting that on the Norton,s the flywheel was not enclosed.
Ignition is by battery and coil.
This motor was purchased from the factory when it closed. it
had been lying in the experimental R&D department for 30 years. The present
owner then built it into this attractive looking motorcycle.
If you want a motorcycle which nobody else in the world possesses
then this is the one for you. Open to offers around $NZ 30,000.
