Negotiation

A negotiator works on behalf of the party for whom they negotiate.  Many of the same skills are required as for mediation but the objectives are different as a mediator is neutral and tries to get the parties to an agreement which they both accept, whatever that may be. A negotiator however tries to get the best result for the party they represent.

When an agreement is first being negotiated the experienced negotiator will understand the position and representations of the other party and will adapt and present alternatives so that the other party can agree to them. An experienced negotiator will also try to clarify understandings and get them documented in the agreement so that the possibilities of later dispute are minimised.

When a dispute has arisen an experienced negotiator may be able to resolve it - especially if the protagonists have developed personal dislikes of one another or are talking at cross purposes.
