What's In a Name" by Ian Mills Samuel Carnel 1832 - 1920; MP for Napier 1889-1896; 7th Mayor of Napier 1904-1907 Arrived in Napier 1869 as manager of Swan & Wrigglesworth and later set up as a photographer at the corner of Brewster St. His keenest desire was to have a Government erect a lighthouse on Cape Kidnappers. Carnell street is named after him and runs alongside the railway line between Georges drive and Jull Street.
