Is George Charlton, the master of the Southern Cross, the George Charleton of Kawhia? George Charlton, general dealer, Kawhia purchased shares in the ship Matilda from Peter Morrison HERVEY and John Thomas PEACOCK in 1860. [From a descendant of George Charlton of Kawhia: Although little is known the two George's are probably different men. George drowned on the Kawhia Bar in 1863 on one of his ships.]
